At Bank of Neopia, we’ve been players too, so we know the truth – at Neopets, it’s all about the paint brush! If you’re like most players, the first item you realized was valuable when you were a newbie was a paint brush, and it was the first valuable object you tried to save up for. In Neopets, a paint brush is an item used to permanently change the colour of pets and petpets. 'Paint brush' is often abbreviated to 'PB'. There are the four basic colors, such as Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue but also a multitude of other colour with new ones often being released, these can be rather exciting such as Faerie and Wraith and Maraquan. More expensive appearances often come with. The only time you can 'find' and faerie paint brush is if you go into the shop wizard there you should type in faerie paint brush. I will guarentee that they are going to be 99,999 NP.
A few examples of the many paint brushes that can be found around Neopia.
A paint brush is a special type of item that can be used to change the colour of a Neopet or Petpet. The first paint brushes were released on May 9, 2000. Within the Neopets community, the act of using a paint brush is called 'painting'. The colour that a Neopet or Petpet becomes after painting depends on which paint brush is used. For example, a Blue Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Blue, while a Scritchy Sketchy Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Sketch. Paint brushes disappear after they are used and, as such, each paint brush can only be used once.
Paint brushes are broadly divided into two groups: those that can be used to paint Neopets and those that can be used to paint Petpets. These groups are mutually exclusive; paint brushes intended for Neopets cannot be used on Petpets, and paint brushes intended for Petpets cannot be used on Neopets. Users can determine which group a paint brush belongs to by examining the name of the paint brush. If the paint brush's name contains the word 'Petpet', then it can only be used on Petpets. If the paint brush's name does not contain the word 'Petpet', then it can only be used on Neopets.
Obtaining a paint brush[edit]
With the exception of a few select paint brushes that are sold at the Hidden Tower, paint brushes cannot be purchase from official Neopian shops. Instead, users must obtain paint brushes by winning them from certain games of chance, such as the Fruit Machine and the Alien Aisha Vending Machine, or by receiving them as part of a Random Event. Paint brushes are also sometimes available as prizes for participating in plots or winning certain contests. On top of that, the Advent Calendar has been known to occasionally give out paint brushes. Users also have a small chance of receiving a paint brush when they redeem a gold key in Key Quest.
Excluding the four starter paint brushes that are included inside of newbie packs, all paint brushes are tradable. This means that paint brushes can be purchased from other users using the Auction House, the Trading Post, or user shops. Because the demand for paint brushes within the Neopets economy is so high, users can often sell their paint brushes for tens of thousands or even millions of neopoints.
Using a paint brush[edit]
To use a paint brush on a Neopet, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Rainbow Pool. At the Rainbow Pool, the user will be shown a picture of each of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Neopets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Neopet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Submit button to use the paint brush.
To use a paint brush on a Petpet, the user must first attach the Petpet to one of their Neopets. Next, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Petpet Puddle. At the Petpet Puddle, the user will be shown a picture of each Petpet that is attached to one of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Petpets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Petpet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Paint this Petpet! button to use the paint brush. Petpets that have been zapped by the Petpet Lab Ray cannot be painted.

Trivia[edit]
In 2002, during the month of May, TNT held a paint brush competition and let users vote on which paint brush they would like to see next. During the first round of this competition, users could vote for one of three new paint brushes: the Baby Paint Brush, the Tartan Paint Brush, or Mystery Island Paint Brush. The Baby Paint Brush received the most votes during this round and was declared the winner on May 15, 2002. During the second round, users could choose between the Tartan Paint Brush, the Mystery Island Paint Brush, and the Pirate Paint Brush. On May 21, 2002, the Pirate Paint Brush was declared the winner after receiving 194,375 votes. Even though the Mystery Island Paint Brush lost both rounds of the paint brush competition, it would still be revamped and released on June 27, 2002.
There are three colours only available by using a Paint Brush: Royal, Usuki, and Quiguki. These colours are not available through the Rainbow Fountain or the Lab Ray.
Interestingly, many colours that Neopets can only obtain by using the Lab Ray or the Rainbow Fountain, such as Robot or Clay, are available to Petpets by using paint brushes.

At the beginning of the rainbow lies the Rainbow Pool, a place where any pet with a Paint Brush can bathe in the waters and transform into another colour! Rather spiffy, eh?
Painting A Pet
From drab... to fab!
Step 1: Obtaining a Paint Brush
Whether you want your pet to sprout wings with the aid of a Faerie Paint Brush or grow scales and fins with a Maraquan Paint Brush, you're going to have to get a brush!
Paint Brushes can be gained from random events, contest prizes, and even some dailies. The Hidden Tower also sells four exclusive Paint Brushes (Baby, Darigan, Maractite and Royal), but the most reliable way of getting a Paint Brush is to buy one off another user. Most brushes can be found on the Trading Post since they're so expensive, but the Shop Wizard may also be a good place to look for cheaper ones.
However, there are some colours that aren't available through Paint Brushes.
Lab Ray and/or Rainbow Fountain Only:Alien, Chocolate, Coconut, Clay,Custard, Garlic, Ice, Jelly, Mallow, MSP, Robot, Snot, and Sponge. 8-Bit Colour:8-Bit was exclusive to the Lab Ray until the release of the 8-bit Power-Up Potion. Technically, the potion acts similar to a Paint Brush, but you do not need to go to the Rainbow Pool to use it; you can use it from your inventory. Fruit Colours: These are available for Chias if you feed them magical Chia Pops. With these, a Chia can become Chokato, Carrot, Orange, Pea, Plum, Tomato...you get the idea. Mutant Colour:Mutant Pets come from Dr. Sloth's Transmogrification Potions. They can also be received through the lab ray. Magma Colour:Magma Pets can only be painted by taking a dip in the Magma Pool.
Step 2: Going to the Rainbow Pool
Alright, so this part is pretty straightforward. First, go to Neopia Central then click on the small pool with the rainbow coming down into it.
Once you get there, you will see the Paint Brushes you have in your Inventory. Your pets will be listed at the bottom of the page with a dropdown in which you will find the colours available for that particular pet.
To paint your pet, just click on the colour underneath the list and press submit. (Make sure you check the right colour, because there's no warning for this!)
And voilà! Once your pet has been blow dried, you're instantly taken to the Quick Reference page where you can see your pet in all its new glory!
So, see? Painting a pet is as easy as pie! Getting the Paint Brush is the hardest part.
